Santa Clara PS students dazzled by Aboriginal dance group during Naidoc Week

Wesley College Aboriginal dance group Moorditj Mob performed and a Welcome to Country was performed by a student’s grandparents.

Indigenous players from the Perth Football Club helped during a footy skills session and there were Aboriginal stories and painting.

Santa Clara Primary School teacher and Naidoc Day organising committee member Mim Ellis said the school had not had a whole day of celebrating Naidoc Week before.

“We’ve done smaller celebrations of Naidoc Week before but nothing like this. We have lots of different cultures at our school so we do celebrate days like Harmony Day,” she said.

“The day was fantastic; the kids enjoyed it and the dance group was excellent.

“They were very interactive and the kids were able to take part and play didgeridoos.”

Mrs Ellis said she hoped the students took away a better understanding of Aboriginal culture from the day.

“We spoke to the children about the Stolen Generation and what it was like for the kids to be taken away from their families,” she said.
