The Town of Victoria Park has adopted a national solution for people with disability, to end the problem at the majority of its access-friendly public toilets.
The Master Locksmith Access Key system provides key holders with 24-hour access to the toilets, with facilities like liberty swings, beach wheelchairs and railway elevators, in the Town and also at other participating local governments around Australia.
Victoria Park Deputy Mayor Claire Anderson, who has muscular dystrophy and uses an electric wheelchair, said the keys, which can be bought from participating Master Locksmith Association members, meant no longer worrying about opening or closing times for the toilets.
‘This is a fantastic initiative from the Town that’s going to allow greater inclusion of people with disabilities and give them a bit more independence when out in public,’ Ms Anderson said.
The council’s Guide to Council Services for People with Disabilities includes a list of designated, accessible public toilets in the Town and is available on its website under Community ” Disability Access and Inclusion.
It is under review and an updated version of the guide will be available before June.
Ms Anderson also said the Hubert Street toilet block would be open until 9pm, Friday to Sunday nights, for a three-month trial period.
