A TRANSFORMER on a power pole caught fire this morning, cutting electricity for about an hour to about 14,000 people in the Belmont area.

A Western Power spokeswoman said the incident was related to yesterday’s rain.

“Water got into the transformer, which is called water egress,” she said.

“DFES (Department of Fire and Emergency Services) were able to put the fire out and power was restored by 7.15am.

“There is no one out now but there are still some lines down and some debris around.

“We ask for people to stay at least 8m away from any lines and call 13 13 51 for help.”

A DFES spokeswoman said three fire trucks attended the fire, which started at 6.10am, and extinguished it at 6.50am.

There is about $45,000 of damage at the site.
