Tree vandals ‘malicious’: mayor

The damage was valued at about about $45,000.

The trees on Edinburgh, Hopetoun, Ridge and Karoo streets in South Perth were cut off at the base of the trunk with a handsaw in the early hours of March 13.

They include a jacaranda tree, a claret ash and two london plane trees.

‘There appears to be no motive for the destruction of these trees other than malicious damage, with no respect to the value and importance of trees in our community,’ Mrs Doherty said.

‘The City is extremely proud of its beautiful tree canopy lined streets and works hard to maintain this special local amenity in the City. It is disheartening to think that someone could commit such a blatant act, with absolutely no respect for our local area, and the additional costs incurred by the City and ratepayers.’

The City is offering a reward of $500 for information that leads to the successful prosecution of people involved in the vandalism.
