Trio to ride 1000km for Teen Challenge

Tim MayneSouthern Gazette

In October, the veteran officer will take part in a 1000km bicycle ride from Esperance to Perth to help those recovering from addiction.

"The money raised in the ride will go to help Teen Challenge WA which helps young people recover from substance abuse issues; it's about giving young people a chance to right their wrongs," Sgt Richardson said.

Friends Carla Martella and Meghan Thomas, whose husband has experienced family drug and alcohol problems, will join Sgt Richardson.

"My husband is keen to become involved as he has experienced drug and alcohol problems in his own family, so it's a way of giving back to the community," Ms Thomas said.

The three friends took part in the ride for the first time last year and visited recovering addicts at Teen Challenge WA's Grace Academy in Esperance.

"Last year we got the chance to spend the night with the residents and cook dinner and you just get caught up in it and want to help them," Ms Thomas said.

"Last year we saw kids just going into the program, so it will be great to see their progress and hopefully their improvement."

The trio will ride the 1000km from Perth to Esperance over six days but they need to raise $3500 each to participate in the ride.

With a little help from friends and garage sales, the trio are already on their way to raising the required total, but need further donations.

A fundraising night will be held on Saturday, July 4, at Food for Me Cafe at 877 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park.

Cost is $75 per person and includes entertainment, nibbles, an Elvis impersonator and dancing, with all proceeds going to Teen Challenge.
