Ursula Frayne Catholic College duo level up with new video game

Aaron CorlettSouthern Gazette

TWO Ursula Frayne Catholic College students have reached a new level after their video game got them a place in the finals of a national competition.

Year 9 students Harry Brayford and Seth Shaw are finalists in the senior video game section of the Screen It competition, Australia’s largest moving image competition for school-aged filmmakers, animators and game makers.

The boys created The Chilling Chase in their own time; the video game involves the user using a cursor to avoid enemies while also avoiding barriers and obstacles.

Harry said a school project had opened the boys’ eyes to the idea of creating a video game.

“We heard about the competition and thought it would be a good idea to join up,” he said.

“We then used some software that mixes coding with a number of other functions and allows the creator to make games that are either complex or simple.

“The idea of the game revolves around the use of a cursor and to run enemies into barriers to destroy them.”

Seth said they had friends and classmates test the game during development.

“I think everyone had fun with it; we wanted to balance the game so it wasn’t too easy or too hard,” he said.

Seth said they were both very surprised and excited when they found out they were finalists in the competition.

“It’s a big achievement and we are going over to Melbourne next month for the finals,” he said.

“I can’t wait to see how it pans out and I’m excited to see the games that the other students have made.”
