What to expect from Costco in Perth

Staff WriterSouthern Gazette

THE first WA Costco store is set to open its doors in early 2020 as the construction work gathered pace at Perth Airport.

The new Costco will cover a 14,000 square metres, which will include an optical centre, hearing aid centre, tyre centre and a petrol station.

American favourites including pop tarts, Swiss Miss hot chocolate and Reeses peanut butter cups were likely to be in stock, according to the Costco Wholesale Perth’s Facebook post.

Costco has its own brand Kirkland, which manufactures a variety of products including pumpkin pie, bagels, maple syrup and pecans.

This second largest retailer in the world operates on a membership only system and is known for selling in bulk and offering free samples.

An individual membership to Melbourne’s Costco store costs $60 per year.

Costco offers a range of products, including fresh foods, white goods and jewellery and watches for a one-stop shop.

If the Perth store follows other Costco models, a food court is likely to be in the plans to offer mid-shopping snacks of hot dogs and churros.

Opening hours for the Perth store have not been confirmed but the majority of Costco stores in Australia open from 10am – 8.30pm on weekdays.

Costco Australia managing director Patrick Noone said Costco would present a whole new way of shopping for Perth consumers.

“Members will be able to buy everything from fresh food and electronics to clothing and cleaning supplies, all in one warehouse,” he said.

“We are excited that Perth Airport is the location for our first store in Western Australia given its proximity to the CBD, the great transport links, and the way it’s becoming a consumer-focused retail hub.”

Perth Airport chief corporate services officer Debra Blaskett said Costco would be a welcome addition to the Airport West Retail Park next to the DFO.

“Costco needed somewhere that could provide space for their warehouse with connectivity to freight routes, and still be close and accessible to the shopping public from across Perth – Perth Airport ticks all those boxes,” she said.

Ms Blaskett said the project would give a boost to the WA economy, generating about 200 construction jobs and 275 retail jobs when it opens next year.
