TAYLOR Denning describes winning the City of South Perth’s Emerging Artist Award last year as the biggest moment of her career so far.
The Curtin University student (20) was a surprise winner after nominating for the Young Artist Award but going on to claim the major prize.
Following on from her success, she is calling on other artists to nominate for the 2016 Emerging Artist Award for a chance to share in $8500 worth of prizes.
Denning said she attended the awards night with no expectations about winning the prize but it was a pleasant surprise.
“My winning entry was a plaster cast of pillows,” she said.
“I’m completing my honours at the moment with a focus on domestic space and objects after I was inspired by moving houses.
“I came to the awards night straight after work and I was not expecting to win anything but it is definitely my most significant moment of my artistic career.”
Denning said she believed the award was encouragement that was she on the right path with her art.
“I’d call on other artist to enter the award, I only entered in the youth category but it was big surprise to win,” she said.
“The award has opened up opportunities for me, I’ve since been asked to take part in a group show at the Heathcote Museum and Gallery, which opens in October.”
