IN the article in the October 20 edition headlined “Bush burn successful”, Peter Dans, Parks and Wildlife director of regional and fire management services, congratulated himself and his department for the successful prescribed burning of more than 75,000 hectares of bush in the south-west forest region.
In the article, Mr Dans states that a $20 million allocation from the Government over four years has provided the flexibility to do prescribed burns on “suitable days”.
While his department’s intentions are good, I would simply ask Mr Dans to improve his department’s protocols so that the two million residents of Perth are not forced to endure for several days at a time the ill-health effects caused by the noxious pall of smoke and pollution lingering over the city as a direct result of his department’s activities.
Mr Dans, if you can achieve that outcome, then by all means give yourself a pat on the back.
