Fertiliser primary cause of algae

John Bessell-Browne, South PerthSouthern Gazette

I AM surprised by your report (Southern Gazette, December 13), that says the City does monthly maintenance works that includes weed control, rubbish collection, erosion control and monitoring of the lagoon conditions and functioning, but does not mention the primary cause of algae – fertiliser.

I advise you to test the water for excessive nutrients that cause algae. Councils and residents use huge amounts of fertiliser that seep into our waterways, lakes and lagoons without any government control.

There is no political will to limit this fertiliser that has caused havoc in most, if not all our water. It has caused immense destruction to the beautiful environment I knew when I was young.

Few people are concerned with the destruction of our environment, so don’t expect anything to change.
