Fitting tribute

Janice TeoSouthern Gazette

MY family and I attended the Victoria Park dawn ceremony to commemorate the centenary of the landings at Gallipoli.

The ceremony was a fitting and emotive tribute to the Anzac spirit, and it was heartening to see that the crowds were as big as ever. That bodes well that we will not forget, as indeed we should not.

The mayor's comments prompted us to visit the memorial wall at the RSL sub branch in East Victoria Park the following day.

To say we were impressed is an understatement. The memorial has been tastefully crafted and magnificently presented, and not only does the Anzac spirit proud, but is a fitting tribute to those of the locality who did not return.

The wall has symbolic meaning, is beautifully situated, backed by native bush, and in a quiet and reflective corner of our bustling community.

RSL president Kelvin Liddiard, the Victoria Park council, and other sponsors who made this memorial wall possible should be rightly proud of their efforts that brought a fitting memorial into being.

Having visited the site and quietly paid my respects, I have to say those who would question this symbol of remembrance in any way have missed the point completely.

Well done to everyone involved.
