Fund facilities, not fight

Steven Gerhardy, WaterfordSouthern Gazette

LINDEN Knight, Opinion, November 8, is spot on in objecting to the use of ratepayers’ funds to establish a $60,000 fighting fund to oppose a South Perth development.

If some people are not happy with a development that meets the City’s planning requirements then they can choose to take further action. But as Linden points out, it should be at their expense, not mine.

This sets a dangerous precedent – will the City also fund the legal action of other anti-development groups?

It is ironic that the same edition of the Southern Gazette includes a report on the City’s campaign to have a train station built in South Perth (City puts station back on agenda).

To justify the cost of a new station, the City should be encouraging developments which increase the local population and hence the demand for better transport facilities.

Scrap the fighting fund and put the proceeds towards facilities that can benefit the whole community.
