Opinion: Name shame for new buildings

Andrew Lynn, ComoSouthern Gazette

I had recently heard stories that the magnificent new buildings which have been constructed on the Ernest Johnson Reserve were to be named after our current local state member.

I enquired of the Council as to what consultation and on what basis the proposed naming had been based, as I understand there is with some local authorities a ban on naming facilities after serving politicians.

I received a generic response which did not answer the question until I saw your story on the front page of your most recent edition.

Both Bill Grayden and Vincent Pendal were strong local members and it would have been better to give them recognition rather than the current incumbent, who could be recognised at some stage after his retirement.

Alternatively, we have Mr Beazley who has a distinguished career as a senior politician, ambassador to the US and is now, as I understand it, providing his knowledge in the service of academia.

A very disappointing exercise by the local council.
