Opinion: Stop rewarding politicians and public servants

Enzo Leone, MarangarooSouthern Gazette

CONGRATULATIONS (Australian of the Year) Professor (Alan) Mackay-Sim. Well deserved.

However, the continual awarding to politicians and public servants is infuriating.

They are being awarded for just doing their jobs, like we all do, but in their case usually badly and well renumerated. After the shameful Rudd-Gillard-Rudd debacle, Gillard on her politician’s lifelong pension is deemed in need of a gong.

Where are the Aboriginal women in the north of our state who tirelessly fight the scourge of alcoholism, violence and sexual assault in their communities?

Where are the volunteers who devote themselves to women’s refuges, men’s sheds, disabilities and community drug rehabilitation programs?

Instead we go for celebrity actors and musicians for just being famous.

This self-aggrandisement with the same people who typically appear on government-appointed committees needs to be called out.
