Real reason

Staff ReporterSouthern Gazette

IT’S no surprise to South Perth ratepayers that our rates are going up.

But Mayor Sue Doherty shouldn’t claim that one main reason is due to the rise in gross rental assessments.

According to REIWA, rents have been steadily falling for some time now, the median fall is $5 per week but, in South Perth, the fall is $25 per week.

We all know the primary reason for the rate rises.

The City of South Perth squandered our money first on an amalgamation with Victoria Park for which there was no mandate from ratepayers and then, when that failed, in fighting the State Government in a desperate bid to save their jobs.

If they can’t balance the budget, the deficit should come out of their wages, not our rates.

Where is the accountability?
