Mixed bag on city rates for readership

The City of Belmont endorsed what is likely to be one of the lowest rate rises in the State with a 2.25 per cent increase to bring the average cost of rates to $1120.

"We have also been able to keep our rubbish charges at the same level as last year ($293), which means there will be no increase in this area," Belmont Mayor Phil Marks said.

He said the budget was aligned with the City's plan for the future and provides the resources to deliver on the significant social, business, natural and built Belmont objectives.

"Now that the uncertainty of reform has been removed, the City has maintained our commitment to the community to provide and expand our excellent, cost-effective services and facilities," he said.

Major projects in the Belmont budget include redevelopment and enhancement of Belmont Avenue and the Belmont Business Park streetscape, and continued focus on community safety and CCTV.

The Town of Victoria Park endorsed its draft abridged budget, which includes an 8 per cent increase in rates, and the City of South Perth has projected an increase of about 4 per cent.

Victoria Park Mayor Trevor Vaughan said council agreed an 8 per cent increase, combined with cost-saving activity, would provide the resources to deliver the Town's strategic community plan and maintain a high standard of services.

"We are achieving the mission of the Town and naturally this, coupled with rising population, results in a significant increase in demanded for services," he said.

Major projects include upgrades to the Leisurelife and Aqualife centres and a community building in Lathlain Place.
