THE FIRST Avon Descent was held more than 40 years ago and vice-commodore of Burswood’s Power Dinghy Racing Club David McConkey hopes it will continue to flourish for many years ahead.
The Avon Descent is a unique WA sporting event and attracts competitors and spectators from all over the nation and overseas.
Competitors challenge the Avon and Swan rivers in a variety of paddle and power craft boating over a two day time trial, covering over 120km.

READ NOWMr McConkey (31) welcomed his first child into the world two months ago and said he wanted the competition to be around long enough to see his son join him in the power dinghy.
“I would like to see him get a passion for the sport and end up racing with me,” he said.
“It’s such a unique sport and anyone can get involved and do it.”
Mr McConkey said he also loved the social side of the sport.
“There are always boats and motors available and people looking for or selling second-hand gear, new people can get involved quite easily,” he said.
“You give it a go once and you’ll never look back, it’s a very addictive sport.”
Mr McConkey and his brother Chris Denholm will compete together in the Avon Descent in August this year.
