THE Perth Redbacks ended the regular season on a high, beating the East Perth Eagles in both games of a double header on Saturday.
In the Women’s SBL, the Eagles were always guaranteed of finishing last but were looking to finish the season on a high at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre but the Redbacks knew they needed to win to 100 per cent confirm their playoff spot.
East Perth did start well going on an 8-0 and leading by seven points early on, and still by five at quarter-time.
Perth got going from there to end up winning by 11 points (50-61) to set up a quarter-final match up with the Magic.
Emilee Harmon top-scored for the Redbacks with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Gabbi Turner added 12 points and Bianca Donovan 12 points in her 150th SBL appearance.
Jess Jakens also had six points and nine rebounds, Lisa Wallbutton six points, eight boards and four steals, and Ajay Johnson five points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
The win sets up a quarter final series with the Mandurah Magic for the seventh-placed Rebacks, which starts on Saturday at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre before game two takes place at Belmont Oasis on August 12 with a possible game three happening the next day, if necessary.
In the Men’s SBL, the Redbacks took on the Eagles needing to win to remain in fourth spot and East Perth was looking to finish 2017 on a high note.
In the end it was the Redbacks who prevailed in an entertaining and high-scoring contest by nine points to give them four consecutive wins to finish fourth ahead of a quarter-final battle with the Slammers.
For the Eagles, it was yet another performance where they played quite well and gave themselves a chance but just fell short which tells the story of their season of missed opportunities.
Shawn Redhage and Lee Roberts both had monster nights for the Redbacks.
Redhage finished with 37 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals shooting 16-of-21 from the field.
Roberts had 36 points, seven assists and five rebounds shooting 13-of-21 from the field. 4-of-4 from three-point range and 6-of-6 at the line.
The Redbacks will take on the South West Slammers in the quarter finals, with game one taking place at Belmont Oasis on Saturday before game two takes place at the Eaton Recreation Centre the following Saturday.
If necessary, game three will be back on home court for the Redbacks the next day.
