Aaron CorlettSouthern Gazette

A FOCUS on defence is paying off for one of Perth Redbacks junior teams as it sits undefeated with one game to go before finals.

The under-16 girls division 2 team has won an impressive 17 consecutive games as they look to close out a fantastic season.

Coach Josh Wallace said the girls had bought into what he had asked them to do.

“My style of basketball is about defence and so during the pre-season we focused on fitness and some defensive structures,” he said.

“I had a positive feeling about the team because it’s been the same group of girls during the past few years and they’ve gone from one win to eight wins last year.

“There were some rough games in the first five or six weeks but since then they have been great.”

Wallace said lots of the team’s points had come from its defensive efforts.

“A lot of our points have come from our defence, we have quite a few quick runners and we have a girl that it is about 180cm who can rebound and throw great outlet passes,” he said.

“We are little bit nervous heading into the last part of the season; it’s hard to keep everyone focused for the entire game each week and we don’t want a hiccup in our first finals game.”
