LAKAY Judo Club has reached another milestone, participating in the 2018 WA State Judo Championship.

It was the first time that trainees from the Belmont-based club have taken part in the event after the club’s establishment in July 2017.

The championships were held on March 25 at the WA State Netball Centre and 17 representatives from the club took part.

The club took home two gold, one silver and six bronze medals.

Volunteer head coach Lito Uyami said the trainees’ performances “exceeded all expectation” in spite of the odds.

“The trainees have all started from a grassroot level and have only been training for less than a year, and only once a week,” he said.

“They have fared well even against opponents who have competed on a national level.

“The whole club is very happy and proud of this achievement.”

The club’s Term 2 training program begins on April 29 between 12.30pm and 3.30pm at the Centenary Park Community Hall-Multi Purpose Room.
