Cougars claw over gritty Redbacks

The Redbacks men lost 104-99 in a tight game in which the lead changed seven times.

Power forward Michael Vigor top-scored for the Redbacks with 29, along with six rebounds, while centre Justin Brown was their next highest scorer with 20 and seven rebounds.

Point-guard Adam Johnston scored 19 and had six rebounds and four assists and swing-man Bennie Lewis had 19 and five rebounds. At the half-way mark of the season the Redbacks men now have seven wins and six losses and are in sixth place in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks women’s team’s 75-68 loss meant they have slipped from eighth to 10th placing in the 12-team competition with four wins and seven losses.

Redbacks centre Marita Payne was their highest scorer with 19 points.

Point-guard Rachel Lisch again put in a solid performance being their next highest scorer on 15, while small forward Jess Jakens scored 11.

State Basketball League action continues this Friday when the Redbacks meet the Perry Lakes Hawks at their home venue of Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre.

The women’s game starts at 6.30pm and the men’s game at 8.30.

This is followed by an away game for the Redbacks at the Willetton Basketball Stadium against the Willetton Tigers, with tip-off for the women’s game being at 6pm and 8pm for the men’s game.
