Demons burn out in second quarter

Mark ThornberSouthern Gazette

Perth captain Paul Bevan won the toss and kicked to the southern end of the ground but it was home team West Perth player Anthony Saylor who kicked the first goal at the two-minute mark.

Bevan quickly responded running into an open goal to level the match, while both teams played the remainder of the quarter predominately in the midfield.

The Falcons led by one point after an even first quarter, kicking 4.3 to 4.2.

But it was the second quarter when the Falcons took flight, with captain Jason Salecic and Aaron Black pilling on the pressure in the midfield and opening up a 21 point lead by half-time.

Perth still trailed the Falcons by 36 points by the third quarter in spite of an impressive performance by Bevan, who kicked his fifth goal for the match.

The Falcons held on to their 36-point lead until the final siren despite solid work from Perth players Julian Jacobs with 26 touches and Ashley Smith with 29 touches.

Next week Perth returns home to Lathlain Park to play the black-and-whites, while West Perth will face East Perth at Leederville oval.
