TWO of Perth’s best and brightest golfing stars will go toe to toe for the WA Open crown at the Royal Perth Golf Club this week.

Defending champion Curtis Luck and Royal Perth Golf Club member Brett Rumford are in the field for the competition.

Luck said there was some added pressure as defending champion but he was happy to play in the event again.

“Last year was a big year and it started at the WA Open but to go on to bigger things at the US Amateur (Championship) later in the year, it kicked started my career,” he said.

“Life as a pro is good, I’ve been lucky that the win at the US Am opened up doors to play professional events at the end of last year and the start of this year.

“When I rock up to the golf course, the goal is the same and I just try to play the best golf that I can and hopefully that’s good enough.

“I’m excited to get this week underway and give it another crack.

Luck said he was familiar with the Royal Perth Golf Course and as a former member felt confident.

Rumford said he was feeling fine after surgery in 2015 to remove 30cm of small intestine to clear a blockage caused by a piece of apple.

“Everything is fine now, it’s a distant memory. There will be a few knock on effects but I’ve been feeling strong,” he said.

“There are no excuses physically so now I’ve got to get back on the horse.

“It’s great to be back at Royal Perth, I’ve been playing here since I was 10.

“You’d like to think you have an advantage after playing here for 30 years but championship golf is a different set-up.”

Entry for the tournament is free for spectators.
