EMPHATIC wins in round 2 has Perth Blitz’s 2017-18 Gridiron West campaign back on track.
Returning to Lark Hill Sporting Complex in Port Kennedy to take on the Claremont Jets, both Blitz teams sit on a win and a loss, erasing last week’s disappointing round with a 34-12 win to the seniors, while the juniors dominated 36-0.
The seniors raced out of the blocks to lead 26-6 at half time against an inexperienced Jets, the offence combining a powerful running game with spectacular passes while the defence was able to restrict the opposition to low yards gained.
Scoring five touchdowns and two 2-point conversions, the Blitz offence found space all game long.
Running back Jon Liu starred with 81 rushing yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Trenton Rohman amassed 186 passing yards including three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.
The defence halted the Jets’ passing game and significantly improved its tackling, gallantly led by linebackers Mitchell Cavanagh with six combined tackles, one sack and one forced fumble, and Tom Beange who had five combined tackles, one sack and an interception.
The junior side also played a strong game on both sides of the ball as a 22-0 half time lead turned into a shut-out by full time, with five touchdowns, two 2-point conversions and a safety.
Quarterback Ben Metcalfe returned after missing round 1 and dominated with 118 passing yards, three touchdowns, and 146 rushing yards – including two rushing touchdowns – while defensive lineman Harry Hobson toiled all game to have six combined tackles, one sack, one interception and blocked a Jets punt to score a safety.
Next round Perth Blitz plays Perth Broncos at its new home ground, James Miller Oval in Manning, which will feature the women’s side playing its first ever game.
Juniors play at 12pm, the women take to the field at 2pm and the seniors battle at 4pm.
