PERTH Blitz stalwart Scott Smith’s 100th game ended in heart break on Friday night as his side lost to Swan City Titans 18-16.

Kicking off round 5 at Curtin University, a hand injury in the first quarter did not stop former club president Smith from battling on, but a touchdown with six seconds remaining saw the Titans snatch victory.

Two final-quarter touchdowns to the Titans would see Blitz regroup, as lapses in concentration at crucial moments on both sides of the ball ultimately cost the game.

Once again the key to staying in the game was their strong defence.

Defensive lineman Keith Eade had eight solo tackles, one sack, and forced two fumbles, while cornerback Aidan Spencer made two interceptions to give the offence great field position on both occasions.

From the second quarter, the offence found their groove and seemingly controlled the next two quarters.

The offensive line provided gaps for running back Jon Liu to find 70 yards from 16 carries, with receivers Paul Mamotte and Munya Matema both scoring touchdowns.

The Blitz’s are on two wins and three losses.

Meanwhile the women’s team sit undefeated atop the ladder after a third consecutive victory.

The defence toiled hard in the 36-0 victory to shut out the Titans’ offence, while receiver Tegan Brown had four catches for three touchdowns off 116 yards.

In round 6, Blitz return to James Miller Oval on Saturday in a triple-header against West Coast Wolverines.

Juniors kick off proceedings at noon, women play at 2pm, and seniors at 4pm.
