Hockey: WA Diamonds must win NZ tie after 4-2 loss to Qld

Jessica WarrinerSouthern Gazette

THE WA Diamonds are hopeful for a finals spot in the Australian Hockey League after a 4-2 loss to Queensland on the weekend.

Despite the result against last year’s winners, the Diamonds can still qualify for the semi-finals if they defeat New Zealand this week.

WA were a goal up in the opening six minutes thanks to Penny Squibb, but Queensland hit back with goals from Ashlea Fey, Rebecca Greiner and Stephanie Kershaw.

Savannah Fitzpatrick’s field goal in the final quarter brought the score to 4-1, but the Diamonds managed a consolation after Kathryn Slattery turned in another penalty corner attempt from Penny Squibb with seconds to go.

“It’s disappointing to get the loss, but I felt like they probably had the game over us from the start, so I think that’s probably something we should look at,” WA Diamonds and Hockeyroos star Kathryn Slattery said.

“The way the results are going, the next game is basically going to be a final to go in to the actual finals. We’ve watched New Zealand play against Queensland so we’ve done a bit of scouting there.

“They’re a bit of an unpredictable team, they’re quite young and inexperienced, but they’ve showed against ACT they can put a pretty good game out there on the pitch.”
