Perth Blitz complete a perfect weekend with three wins against the Broncos

Jeremy TruongSouthern Gazette

PERTH Blitz made it three wins from three outings on Saturday against Perth Broncos in round four of the 2018-19 Gridiron West season.

The clash at James Miller Oval saw the senior men win a nail biter 26-20, the women triumph 22-0, and the juniors victorious 18-16.

In what was a tight contest between the seniors, the Broncos were without many of their top players and Blitz took advantage in the first half.

Quarterback Andrew Perez led a strong aerial game, throwing two touchdowns from 20 completed passes for 266 yards.

And after the main break, Naph Smith returned an interception for a touchdown that made the score 20-6 and appeared to be the game sealer for the Blitz.

But a touchdown reply from the Broncos in the third and a late converted touchdown in the fourth quarter made for a tense finish.

The victory moved Blitz above the Broncos in the standings into fourth place.

The women’s game was a rematch of last season’s Westbowl Grand Final decider – with the same outcome.

Blitz took the game to the ground and gained yards with running backs Britney Weretapou and Janelle Callisto carrying the ball for 52 yards and 48 yards respectively.

The women sit atop the standings and moved to three wins from three games.

Earlier in the day, the Blitz junior team recorded their first victory of the season in a tightly contested battle.

Quarterback Tom Paskov threw two touchdowns and ran in another to lift the reigning champions off the bottom of the standings.

The Blitz host Curtin Saints at James Miller Oval this Saturday.

Juniors will play at noon, the women will kick off at 2pm, and the seniors at 4pm.
