Perth Blitz continue winning ways over Perth Broncos

Aaron CorlettSouthern Gazette

PERTH Blitz continued their winning ways after hard fought victories over Perth Broncos on Saturday.

The round 12 fixture at Lightning Park saw the seniors unconvincingly win 22-8 and the women sneak home 6-0, while the juniors were handed victory after the Broncos could not field a side.

In both games, it was the defence who bailed the Blitz out of trouble in their first game back after a two week break across the league.

After a slow start, the seniors managed three touchdowns and two 2-point conversions.

Linebacker Yoshua Arnold had an interception and two forced fumbles – including a 50-yard chase down to knock the ball out of a Broncos’ receiver’s hand on the two yard line.

Receiver Munya Matema starred on offence with a touchdown and 2-point conversion from 126 receiving yards and 65 rushing yards.

Blitz will finish third in the standings regardless of other results throughout the remainder of the season.

In the womens’ game, the defence also stood strong to move atop the standings.

A touchdown from linebacker Kaylee Halse – who also registered five solo tackles, three assists and two sacks – was the solo score.

It was a scrappy affair as Blitz’s usually dangerous offence failed to fire.

The juniors consolidated third place after the Broncos forfeited prior to the game.

Next Saturday the Blitz return home to host Rockingham Vipers with all three teams back in action.

Proceedings begin from noon.
