Perth gridiron: Blitz pull out win over Curtin Saints with late scoring drive

PERTH Blitz survived a late scare to defeat Curtin Saints 26-22 at James Miller Oval on Saturday.

The round 5 Gridiron West win pushed the Blitz into third place on the ladder after the home team nearly blew an 18-8 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Saints scored midway through the final stanza and recovered an on-side kick to score again on the subsequent drive to lead 22-18 with minutes to play.

But Blitz utilised big man Lloyd Skinner to march the ball up the field on key plays, with Skinner ultimately scoring the winning touchdown.

Skinner finished the day with two touchdowns from nine catches and totalled 105 yards.

In the game prior, Blitz’s women side continued its dominance over the competition with a comprehensive 32-0 win.

The floodgates opened in the second half, building from an 8-0 half time lead on the back of a powerful running game.

Running backs Britney Werepatou and Janelle Callisto pounded the Saints’ defence as Werepatou scored three touchdowns from 86 yards and Callisto scored one touchdown from 60 yards.

The Blitz have a perfect record from four games and will have a break next week.

The result in the earlier junior game was reversed, with Curtin winning 30-6.

Next week the Blitz men and junior teams play Westside Steelers at James Miller Oval.
