Premier Cricket: South Perth downed by Claremont-Nedlands

Aaron CorlettSouthern Gazette

IT was a tough weekend for South Perth and Perth with the Sky Blues losing to Claremont-Nedlands and the Demons not being able to play their first grade match.

Claremont-Nedlands posted a 100-run victory over South Perth at Cresswell Park on Saturday, which means the Sky Blues finish sixth on the ladder as they prepare for the finals.

The Tigers struggled for consistent partnerships when setting their total, however Tim David (53) and Chris Brabazon (39) steadied the ship for the host side.

A late 39 from Brad Hope pushed the side to 226 from their 50 overs, with Cam Huckett and Sam Birchall both taking two wickets.

Despite 71 from Michael Bailey the Sky Blues were never in the hunt with a weakened batting lineup.

Hilton Cartwright could only manage 24, while no other batsman made double figures as South Perth was all out for 126.

Haydan Morton secured economical figures of 3-19 from his 10 overs.

Perth were unable to take the field as play was abandoned without a ball being bowled at Stevens Reserve with Fremantle unable to get the pitch up to a suitable standard following last Wednesday’s storm.

The Demons’ second and fourth grade teams played Fremantle at Fletcher Park with mixed results.

The seconds were never in the hunt in chasing the 267 target.

Paul Nicholas with 47 was the only shining light in a disappointing end to their season as they made only 120.

Fourth grade continued its good late season form , winning a sixth game on the trot but miss out on finals by one position.

Jeff Grzinic with 68 not out and Dan McKay with 66 saw Perth post 221 and Fremantle were bowled out for 150.

Next weekend will see semi-finals played at Fletcher Park as Perth plays Joondalup in both first grade and third grade.

In the under-17s Perth will play an elimination final against Wanneroo.

Perth has been consistently strong over recent seasons and finished second once again in the WACA Club Championship for the third season in a row, a terrific effort by the entire club.
