Salter Point ball boy mixes it with world’s best tennis players at Australian Open

SALTER Point boy Matthew Costa had the chance to stand among the world’s best tennis players in his role as a ball boy at the Australian Open.

The 14-year-old was a ball boy during a number of matches, including Japanese star Kei Nishikori’s match against Andrey Kuznetsov.

His mother Cassandra Costa said it took a number of trials before Matthew was selected.

“He applied to be a ball boy during the 2016 Australian Open but they said he should do the Hopman Cup first to get some experience,” she said.

“We went to Melbourne twice for training sessions last year, during which he was critiqued and then chosen as part of the 330-strong train-on squad.”

Ms Coasta said the experience was fantastic for Matthew.

“He was very happy to be able to do it and it came after he was a ball boy for Roger Federer during the Hopman Cup,” she said.

Ms Costa said her son had a keen interest in tennis and often played at the Manning Tennis Club.
