SBL: Redbacks not good enough for Cougars

BOTH the men’s and women’s Perth Redback squads lost against Cockburn Cougars last Saturday night at Wally Hagen Stadium.

The women met a competitive Cockburn side, but after a back and forth battle for 40 minutes Cockburn managed to sneak away with a 75-71 win.

Perth players led the scoreboard with Rebecca Mercer securing 19 points and four rebounds, Lisa Wallbutton taking 14 points and 11 rebounds and captain Jess Jakens supporting with nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Perth men’s side started their game strong, storming out to a 13-point lead at half time, but Cockburn took control and ended with a 116-105 point win.

Redbacks import Jourdan DeMuynck was a standout player, finishing the game with 32 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Lewis Thomas continued with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Joel Wagner supported with 14 points, eight assists and three steals.

The Perth Redbacks will face the Rockingham Flames this Friday night at Belmont Oasis.
