Soccer: Belmont juniors to get half-time run out at World Cup qualifier

AN excited group of youngsters from the Belmont Junior Soccer Club have been chosen to play a half-time game at the international soccer match between Australia and Iraq at Perth Oval tomorrow night.

The club was selected out of hundreds of other clubs to have two five-a-side teams play at half time in front of an expected 17,000-plus people.

President Martin Connolly said 10 players aged 8-11 years have been selected for the prestigious occasion.

“We will have an 8s and 9s composite team and 10s and 11s,” he said.

“It will be a fantastic night and an unforgettable experience for the kids.”

Mr Connolly said he was happy for the parents and the children and thanked Football West for the opportunity.

“The kids have got the chance of a lifetime and they are going crazy,” he said.

He said the club comprised players from 34 nationalities and had gone through some major changes this year, with membership increasing from about 160 to 220 this season.

The club’s website features messages to its members in a range of languages, emphasising its embrace of multiculturalism and diversity.
