COMPETITIVE swimming was not always the plan for Tristan Lin but despite his young age, it seems to be working out.

The son of Christophe Lin, who represented Mauritius at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, Tristan (9) is proving himself to be an excellent swimmer at the Victoria Park Swimming Club.

Tristan claimed six gold medals and three bronze medals at the Swimming WA Junior Short Course Championships during September.

Mr Lin said he did not want Tristan swimming initially because he recognised how mentally tough it could be.

“You see some swimmers fall into a ditch and before I had kids I thought I didn’t want them dealing with the lows,” he said.

“After a while I slowly changed my mind and encouraged him to swim.

“He is still very young and they say you aren’t a professional until you’ve done something for 10,000 hours so we’ll see how he goes.”

Tristan said his favourite strokes were butterfly and backstroke because they were difficult.

“My favourite part of swimming is competing against other kids,” he said.

“I’d like to thank my coaches, parents and teammates for motivating me to swim.”
