Staff ReporterSouthern Gazette

In the past year, the club has sent slalom kayaking representatives to the Australian Open, National Championships, Junior Worlds and Olympic Games.

At the London Olympic Games, Ascot member Robin Jeffery and his Swan Canoe Club partner Kynan Maley competed in the Men’s C2 Finals.

In January, Brodie Crawford took out the Senior Champion Boy at the 2012 Schools Championships. He also made the Canoe Slalom National Talent Squad along with Ascot members Steven Lowther, Kieran Simpson, Harrison Whitlock and Georgina Collin.

Juniors aged 10 to 15 can join the Ascot Slalom group with the 2013 junior intake, with a free come and try day from 9.30 to 11am on Sunday, March 3, at Ascot Kayak Club. The event is open to boys and girls able to swim 50m.

Ascot juniors receive coaching from experienced white-water coaches, some of whom have won medals at National Championships and Youth Olympics.

When the Avon River starts running, they head out to the Walyunga National Park and train and race on the white water.

Every summer about 20 paddlers head interstate to the national championships in the eastern states.
