A VICTORIA Park Squash Club member has shown off his skills on the international stage by winning a trophy at a major tournament.

Shelley resident Greg Chan (12) won the under-13 boys competition at the Hong Kong Junior Squash Open, which ran from July 27 to August 1.

The trophy continues a stellar year for Chan after he won the under-13 boys competition at the 2016 Australian Junior Open in Tasmania in March.

Chan’s mother Ping said she was proud of his achievement because he was not seeded highly going into the tournament.

“There is definitely some interest and passion to play considering his age and he’s been willing to work,” she said.

“I don’t think he needs to be pushed into it and I think he wants to succeed.”

Victoria Park Squash Club coach Sue Hillier said Chan’s temperament made him a special player.

“He’s not fussed if he wins or loses, he would rather entertain,” she said.

“That’s a very rare attribute for someone at his age, but he’s also a very creative player.

“He makes shots that no one expects him to make.”
