WACA Premier Cricket: Perth too hot for University

Aaron CorlettSouthern Gazette

PERTH has extended its unbeaten start to 2018 with wins in all four senior grades against University.

At James Oval, the Demons were keen to get a victory in first-grade skipper Luke Jury’s 100th game.

Batting first and adopting aggressive tactics against the new ball, Perth reached the halfway point in a good position on the back of Jury’s 64.

The wicket became more difficult to score on in the back half and Perth ended with 184 to leave the door open.

The Demons’ opening attack of Josh Nicholas and Liam Guthrie is as good as any in the competition and their spells proved the deciding factor with figures of 4-25 and 4-17, respectively.

University were bowled out for 136.

Adam Disisto shone with an unbeaten 83 to guide the Second Grade to the 210 target, with Lachlan Pratt’s 43 proving vital.

Earlier Akash Fotedar had finished with the good figures of 3-37.

Brad Garland and Rhys McVeigh scored half centuries in the 54-run win in the Third Grade game. Eamonn Munday took 3-22 and skipper Michael Neves took two wickets.

The highlight in the Fourth Grade win was the return of veteran Angus Webster.

His unbeaten 124 was a master class for his young teammates, with the team ending up at 257 from 45 overs.

University put up an excellent response to post 8-238 as Anil Kumar claimed 3-51.

South Perth endured a tough loss at home to Willetton as the visitors reached 5-296. In reply, the hosts could only manage 105.
