WAFL: Perth cops Naidoc Round annihilation

Chris PikeSouthern Gazette

Perth actually started brightly and it was only fitting that on Naidoc Round, the first goal of the game was from indigenous small forward Cody Ninyette.

It took more than 10 minutes for Subiaco to get its opening goal of the game with that coming courtesy of Ben Sokol.

But by quarter-time, Justin Joyce, James Garcia and Sokol again had all kicked truly to see the Lions lead by 24 points on the back of 10 scoring shots to one.

Debutant Ryan Vermeersch then open the goal scoring in the second term for the Lions before Perth got a steadier from emerging big man Blake Johnson.

Vermeersch added a second before captain Kyal Horsley kicked truly and Sokol added his third.

A goal each just before half-time meant that Subiaco was right on top by 51 points on the back of 24 first half scoring shots to three.

Two goals in three minutes to Liam Ryan and then another to Lachlan Delahunty in the opening four minutes of the third term suddenly saw the lead blow out to 69 points as the tone was set for the rest of the second half.

Perth did continue to fight and kicked two third quarter goals and four in the last, but Subiaco finished with five in the third term and six in the last to run out 82-point victors.
