Women win premiership

Staff ReporterSouthern Gazette

The women prevailed over Midland in the Brikmakers State Men’s and Women’s League Finals recently, winning the title by one set and four games.

Both teams were missing major players due to a national tournament and had to call upon reserves to fill the void. After the singles round, the scores were almost tied at three rubbers all and Midland leading by only one game.

Hensman’s Teiwa Casey and Sophie Allen-Fisher both had convincing straight-set victories with Jade Flindell going down in a tight contest and Tara Dunhill losing her match in straight sets.

In the doubles round, Hensman Park decided to use a fifth player, Megan Kauffman.

This was a good move as it proved to be the difference in the final two rubbers of the day.

Playing with Jade Flindell, Kauffman was a strong addition at the top of the doubles and looked to be in for an easy victory after the first set, winning 6-2.

However, Midland were not to be denied and fought back from 1-4 in the second to take it out 7-5 and go on to win the tie-breaker for the match.

The second doubles encounter was also a see-saw affair with the Hensman pair of Casey and Allen-Fisher going out to a 5-2 lead and then being pegged back before finally taking it out 7-5.

In the second set it looked again like an easy set to Hensman Park who went to a 5-1 lead but, in the pressure of a final, lost some ground and only managed to close it after a nail biting 6-4.
