NEW kids on the block General Public Food Co are giving Scarborough diners – and drinkers – something to talk about.

The Doric Street restaurant opened last month with the aim of providing a central community gathering place.

Owners Evan and Sarah Hewitt have lived in the area for many years and Mr Hewitt said they were aware of locals’ desire for a restaurant and bar.

“We wanted to create a cornerstone in the community, where people proudly call it their local, and everyone feels at home,” he said.

General Public Food Co serves up a range of sourdough pizzas, with gluten free and vegan options available, along with sides such as pulled pork tacos, meatballs and haloumi bites.

There are innovative pizza options including carbonara, pulled pork, pea and mint, and meatball or classic combinations like pepperoni and pumpkin and goat cheese.

Those will a sweet tooth will want to save room for the apple crumble dessert pizza.

Food is complemented by a thoughtful wine list and an emphasis on quality local craft beers.

“The interest in craft beers keeps growing and growing, with a wide range now available, but not many venues catering for sophisticated beer drinkers at the same depth wine drinkers receive,” he said.

The venue also gives locals their caffeine fix, with its coffee window open daily from 6am.

Mrs Hewitt said they aimed to cater for all and dogs were welcome (you can even treat them to a pupsicle).

“The neighbourhood is full of twenty-somethings who love to enjoy great food and drink, who don’t always want to travel to the city to get a certain standard of food and drink,” she said.

“There’s also young families who don’t want the hassle of parking or public transport to enjoy a good meal with their babies or children, so we’ve really tailored the menu to please discerning foodies right through to fussy kids.”
