FEARLESS BMX brother and sister duo Kyle and Kishani Green are ramping up training to compete in the world championships next month.

The Wanneroo pair, who train at Westside BMX in Balcatta, have been involved in the sport from a young age and both took out second place at the national championships in April.

Kyle (17) is currently UCI ranked as the Australian number 1 and fourth internationally in the sport and has his sights set on competing in the 2024 Olympics.

“I started on the bike at about 4 years old and actually got my first trophy here at this Westside BMX track in 2004,” he said.

“Where I am now I enjoy it; it isn’t daunting, it is more of a place of freedom for me.”

Kyle will face an 8m starting ramp in races, the equivalent height of a three-storey building.

“I prefer the 8m ramp; you get a lot more speed behind your jumps,” he said.

“You get up the top and can’t even see the bottom of the ramp.

“If you really love a sport you lose that fear; crashes are a part of it.”

While BMX racing was introduced as an Olympic sport in 2008, Kyle said the funding and support available was minimal for potential champions.

“There is still no money in it or support but it has evolved into a more professional sport than it was when I first started,” he said.

Kishani (22), who started BMX nine years ago, now coaches juniors and said more young women were getting involved than ever.

“Women in BMX have expanded drastically, especially since it was introduced as an Olympic sport,” she said.

“It’s just a sense of freedom when you’re riding. It’s hard to explain but it is addictive; I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Westside BMX Balcatta is undergoing a $1.3 million revamp from the City of Stirling which will see it become WA’s premier BMX track by August.
