Balcatta netball tournament marks Sorry Day

MORE than 250 people attended a netball fundraising tournament in Balcatta to mark National Sorry Day.

The May 25 event included a Welcome to Country, traditional dance by Bibbulmun Koorda, hip-hop artist Jamahl Ryder and children’s activities such as face painting and mask making.

About 140 players across 20 teams competed in the tournament at Seamer Sports Centre.

Danni Cameron founded the fundraiser in 2018 and to acknowledge the Stolen Generations and bring people together to build a stronger community.,

Proceeds will be used to fun Aboriginal mental health first aid workshops and cultural activities for children.

“The fundraiser was created in acknowledgement of our fellow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who continue to experience ongoing pain and trauma as a direct result of the forcible removal of children from our families and the disconnect to culture,” she said.
