Balcatta resident turns 100 on Anzac Day

BOOT scooting, line dancing, bowls and gardening are just some of the hobbies Maria Bianco has enjoyed over the past 100 years.

The Balcatta resident celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends on April 25.

Mrs Bianco came out to Australia from Italy with her husband and three children in 1955.

Her daughter Carmel Bartucciotto, who was aged two when the family came to WA, said it was difficult because they didn’t speak English.

She described her mum as an active and independent person.

After losing her husband at the age of 50, Mrs Bianco was determined to learn to read and write and speak English.

The grandmother of seven and great grandmother of 15 also got her driver’s licence in her 50s.

“Mum always lives on the bright side of life,” Mrs Bartucciotto said.
