Balcatta’s Tiny Tots Toy Library sends out SOS

Breanna InferreraStirling Times

A CHILDREN’S toy library in a small shed in the heart of Balcatta has asked for community support to help make it more colourful, child-friendly and ultimately to survive.

Tiny Tots Toy Library will host a PlayDate@Toy Library event on Saturday, April 28, from 9.30am to 12.30pm to attract new members and fundraise for a building refurbishment.

Next to Balcatta Cricket Club on Jones Street, the library houses a collection of toys for children which foster musical, physical and cognitive development, along with social role play.

Library president Jolka Janik said few people knew the library’s metal garage doors opened every Saturday morning.

“If we were better resourced and afforded the opportunity to change our dark brown brick building into something more colourful and kid-friendly, we would then have the chance to garner more members and help more families save money, space and time,” she said.

A colourful mural on the building’s outer walls and repainted interior walls and shelves were priorities for the proposed facelift.

Curious people currently have to peek through a black wire fence to read the toy library’s sign on the wall.

“Feedback from existing members and visitors include comments such as, ‘I didn’t even know there was a toy library here’, or ‘Where is the toy library?’ upon arrival,” vice-president Rina Fu said.
