Balga Senior High School principal Geoff Harris has received the prestigious John Laing Award.

BALGA Senior High School principal Geoff Harris is one of five principals to be awarded the national 2017 John Laing Award earlier this month.

The award recognises the work and commitment to education and consistent demonstration of outstanding school leadership and honour highly-respected former Tasmanian principal John Laing.

Principals Australia Institute chief executive Paul Geyer said the award was highly respected and sought after and that outstanding school leadership had never been more influential in shaping society.

“We live in a complex, fast-moving world with many pressures and influences on children and it is important they receive the appropriate guidance and education to prepare them for their adult lives,” he said.

“Principals recognised by the John Laing Awards exemplify the high standard of leadership required and expected of the contemporary school leader,” added Mr Geyer.

“Great school leadership equates to a great learning experience and inspires both staff and students to be the best they can be.”

Mr Harris, who has worked in the development of effective teaching and learning programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, said he was honoured to receive the award.

He has also co-ordinated a major workshop focusing on solutions to families and community peace and safety and was recently invited to present at the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education in Canada.
