Mr Alkaabi said his shop Morris Place Kebabs was a kebab shop with a difference.

“My regular customers say it’s a really unusual kebab shop, we do pastries and dessert and I use my training in French pastry cooking to bring new things to our customers,” Mr Alkaabi said.

Originally from Iraq, Mr Alkaabi came to Australia in 2000 and has been winning prizes ever since he set up shop four years ago.

Mr Alkaabi said the secret to his success is quality, skill and persistence and he has perfected his craft all over the world.

“I went to French pastry school and studied chocolate art in Malaysia.

“Every December I go and do courses to extend my knowledge and update my skills and stay with all the new techniques of baking.

“I work really hard to get the best quality flour and ingredients for my shop.”

His partner Meng Zhang was originally an accountant but Mr Alkaabi said she now enjoyed baking and helping out with the business.

“From accounting to the bakery it’s a 360-degree turnaround but she’s doing well at it,” he said.

Mr Alkaabi now has his sights set on next year’s competition.
