City of Stirling a hotbed of competition with highest number of Local Govt Election candidates in a decade

CITY of Stirling local government elections are hotly contested this year with 32 candidates, the highest number in past 10 years.

Hamersley ward has the highest number with nine candidates, followed by the Osborne ward with six.

Hamersley ward councillor Samantha Jenkinson will retire this year leaving two vacancies in the ward and former Osborne ward councillor David Michael made the move to state politics when he was elected as the Balcatta MLA in March, creating a vacancy alongside Mayor Giovanni Italiano.

Cr Jenkinson has been a City of Stirling councillor since 2011 and also works as executive director for People with Disabilities WA, the peak consumer advocacy group for people with disability.

Postal votes will be distributed from tomorrow and must be returned by October 21.
