City of Stirling officers to work on draft plan to replace council’s opening prayer

Kristie LimStirling Times

CITY of Stirling council will consider a draft Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country policy at a committee meeting in February next year.

At its September 26 council meeting, Stirling councillors voted for the retiring Cr Samantha Jenkinson’s alternative recommendation for a report outlining the direction and protocols to be prepared by City officers.

Deputy Mayor Keith Sargent said the decision would enable officers sufficient time to undertake consultation with the Reconciliation Action Plan working group elders and complete a composite report.

An opening prayer has been included in council meetings since 2005.
