Commonwealth Games: Balcatta teen athlete chosen to take part in Queen’s Baton Relay

BALCATTA athlete Jacob Hristianopoulos is used to running, but a 200m run in Scarborough promises a once in a lifetime experience for the teenager.

The 14-year-old has been chosen as a baton bearer for the Queen’s Baton Relay as it makes its way through Perth ahead of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Jacob, who attends Churchlands Senior High School, started Little Athletics when he was 10.

He is in just is second year of competing and recently won the long and triple jump men’s under-16 titles at the State Track and Field Championships, which qualifies him for the national competition in March.

“I’m excited and it’s rewarding knowing I have put in lot of hard work and sacrifices following a year of injuries and setbacks,” he said.

“I enjoy the thrill of jumping higher and further with every jump.”

Jacob will be carrying the baton about 200m along West Coast Highway as it arrives in Scarborough on February 25.

“I feel proud and excited to be a part of this at a home Commonwealth Games,” he said.

“I’m honoured for this once in a life time experience.

“(I’m looking forward) to sharing the experience with spectators that come out to watch during the relay.”

From West Coast Highway, the relay will travel to the Esplanade and stop at Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre for a short community celebration at 2.39pm.

Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said it was an honour for the City of Stirling to be involved.

“We are delighted to be part of this rare opportunity to showcase our world class coastline and we are so proud of our baton bearers that have helped shape our diverse community,” he said.

“I encourage the local community to get involved, join in and cheer on our local legends who have been chosen to represent the City.”

There are 23 people taking part in the Scarborough leg of the relay.
