Bert was diagnosed with tuberculosis five months after their wedding and spent the next three years recovering in hospital.

In 1952, Bert arrived home from hospital and the couple raised their family together in their Doubleview property where they still live today.

The couple have led an energetic retirement enjoying caravan trips, ballroom dancing, weekend picnics and tennis parties with friends in their area and from their involvement with the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Scarborough.

The couple’s daughter Wendy said they looked forward to the next big celebration and another letter from the Queen to commemorate Bert’s 100th birthday next year.
